Have you ever heard of a place on earth that defies gravity? unbelievable, is it? Nestled in the lap of snow caped Himalayan ranges and silver valleys, Ladakh in India has a Magnetic hill where a vehicle moves up a steep hill even with their ignition off. The Magnetic hill or Gravity Hill is situated at a distance of 30 km from the capital city Leh and is located on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level.

The magnetic power here can be experienced by switching off the vehicle at a certain spot here. You will notice the vehicle moving up the hill in no time at a speed of about 20 km/hr. The experience is also termed as Himalayan wonder and is a must if you happen to venture into the Himalayan territory of this part of the world.

Even while flying around this region, one can feel the pull of magnetic field. As reported by the local people and Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), when the helicopters and aircrafts come with in the radius of this hill, they start to jerk. To avoid accidents, the fliers are advised to fly at specific speed and height.
The area has become a popular sight seeing place also because of the sikh Gurudwara near the hill which is maintained by the Indian Army. Guru Nanak Dev, the first of the ten Gurus of Sikhism had meditated near this hill in the 17th century. The Magnetic wonder combined with religious sentiments makes this place a must visit while travelling to Ladakh.

I want to go there someday. But seems like it’s difficult to reach that place. Isn’t It?

I’m sorry, the magnetic hill is just an optical illusion. We’ve taken magnetic compasses there and they show exactly the same direction as they should according to the map. There is no magnetic disturbance at that location. Also, try the same trick with a plastic water bottle (which cannot be affected by magnetic forces). It rolls the same direction as the car. The whole area has no buildings or trees for visual reference, and is sloping a different way than you think. In my experience, Ladakhi farmers, who do irrigation every day and are very aware of subtle ups and downs for water flow, are not fooled by the magnetic hill. They say, “The car is rolling downhill. So what?” The rumours of helicopters and planes feeling the magnetic effect are just silly rumours repeated from one blog or badly researched newspaper article to the next. If it doesn’t even affect a hand-held compass it won’t affect a plane!

Theres’s one like this in Santa Rosa, CA, too. It’s just an optical illusion.

There is a stretch of road in Navarre, FL that does the same thing. It is on land owned by the govt and you can not film there.

There is one in South Australia too, near Peterborough.

There are one in Braga, Portugal. Its proved that is an optical ilusion. If someone get there, try to put a football ball on the road and you will see the ball moving. Water work as well. They dont react to magnetic fields

Wow its unbelievable.. how it is happen? anyone here has an explanation?

it is an optical illusion, what happens is the surrounding terrain makes the road LOOK like it is going up hill, when really it is going downhill at a slight angle.
If you were to take a bubble level you would see that the bubble is up in the back, so the road is really pointing downhill. but the hills actually point downhill, and so the road looks uphill. but since you have no reference point the hills look like they are level and the road goes uphill.

It seems there are several of those “magnetic hills”. In Belo Horizonte, Capita of the Minas Gerais States in Brazil the same phenomenum is noticed at the “ladeira do Amendoim”. And like all the others, water also goes up the hill.

If you’ve done any mountain driving, you’ve experienced this effect yourself. You come up to a spot in the road that looks like a sharp downhill and you let off the gas. You expect the car to pick up speed, but it quickly slows down. You punch the gas amazed at how hard your car has to work to go “downhill”. Optical illusion. Happens to me all the time.

Many years ago, with my son aged 10, I visited a “Wonder Spot” near the Wisconsin Dells. As the tour guide went through her tricks, I commented to my son about the truth of the slopes and the optical illusions. The manager came and politely asked me to be quiet or leave, as I was “upseting the other visitors”. With the truth?

If your car really was rolling up hill, it must continue going up when it got to the top of the hill. Thats Fizzix.

welllll….that’s not defying gravity, that’s using magnetic attraction. For one, if there was any sign of antigravity, everyone would be floating, as would the cars, and the dirt, and everything around that region. Two, we cannot defy something that has yet to be proven, and gravity has not been scientifically proven, (thus the LHC).

hey guys i tried it before here in the philippines theres a certain part of the road here in laguna area inside U.P los banos campus(i dont know the exact location). the thing is u park your car facing downhilland stop the engine, then slowly it will move uphill.its just a couple of meters only but really theres a magnetic force or something in that certain location.

There’s one in N. Ireland, in the Mourne Mountains, near Newcastle. A great trick for visiting friends and family!

There is one at Mt Macedon Ranges in Melbourne. Near Hanging Rock. If anyone knows where that is !!! Tis very cool.

yea alrite, i was there last year june(2009)….the magnetic thing is so so ambiguous. With winds over 45kmph u don’t knw if its hydel/magnetic magic!
Also since i was on a bike, t’was kinda tuff to lift my legs when i knew the pull(if it existed) would’nt be much help in balancing at low speeds.
And last but not the least, the slope is to be really scrutinized. It is not very clear if its uphill, and if it is then how much….for all u knw it cud be a lolling stretch.
But a great place, u have to be there to experience the wind, sight and calmness…hats off to the Indian army there!
