A photograph purporting to show a 55ft snake found in a forest in China has become an internet sensation.
It was originally posted in a thread on the website of the People’s Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper in China.
The thread claimed the snake was one of two enormous boas found by workers clearing forest for a new road outside Guping city, Jiangxi province.
They apparently woke up the sleeping snakes during attempts to bulldoze a huge mound of earth.
“On the third dig, the operator found there was blood amongst the soil, and with a further dig, a dying snake appeared,” said the post.
“At the same time, another gold coloured giant boa appeared with its mouth wide open. The driver was paralysed with fear, while the other workers ran for their lives.
“By the time the workers came back, the wounded boa had died, while the other snake had disappeared. The bulldozer operator was so sick that he couldn’t even stand up.”
The post claimed that the digger driver was so traumatised that he suffered a heart attack on his way to hospital and later died.
The dead snake was 55ft (16.7m) long, weighed 300kg and was estimated to be 140 years old, according to the post.
However, local government officials in Guiping say the story and photograph are almost certainly a hoax as giant boas are not native to the area.Via : peopledaily.com

Look at the size of the bucket on the machinery that is holding up the snake, distorted photography for sure.
December 23rd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Yup it’s about average size I’d say. The bucket is way closer to the camera than the guys are.
December 25th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Aww, poor snake
I’d be sick too if I killed such a magnificent creature.
January 5th, 2010 at 3:08 pm
The bucket is a special and not distorted. If chinese says its lies you can bet its the truth
January 15th, 2010 at 3:40 am
This photo is true, but was taken in Papua New Guinea towards the end last year – not China. Such snakes are also found from time to time here.
Contact the country’s two daily newspapers for verification…

Just for clarification the snake is a Reticulated python (Python reticulatus), not a boa.
January 16th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
that is a reticulated python (python reticulatus) not a boa
January 17th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
Even if the bucket is closer to the camera, I’d still say that snake was capable of killing and eating one of those guys (before they chopped it up with a digger at least!)
January 30th, 2010 at 2:28 pm
Actually,
It was not china, and it was not Papua.
This picture was taken in a forest in Kalimantan (Indonesian part of Borneo) when they were preparing the area for coal mining.
I got the soft copy of the original file from a friend who worked in the mining company. It was taken last year by a coleague of my frind with a cheap pocket camera, but it was for sure real.
Of course the bucket and snake apear to be very big compared to the people on the backgrund. It’s a normal effect you get with small-lens cameras.
The snake it self was actually about 10m (~30ft) long, which is big, but not the biggest in the area.

i cant believe they would say its a hoax…thats like a slap in the face to the person who died from the heart attack
February 1st, 2010 at 8:50 pm
that’s not a boa at all, its a python.
and they have a 33 footer at the houston zoo.
it’s real, and really a maneater.
but the one in that photo aint 55 feet, though every bit of 40 and some change…
February 2nd, 2010 at 2:32 am
That is amazing, might be fake, but wow if it’s real!!
February 17th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
it is not a snake ,it is nageswar god
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Wow, wouldn’t like to come face to face with that snake, (if it’s real) or one even half that size.
March 14th, 2010 at 12:02 am
That’s snakes closer to 20 ft. Excellent example of forced perspective.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:13 am
Poor big snake… People should leave the forest alone. They don’t bother anyone, if you don’t bother them.
March 26th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
but?
Is china? Papua? Borneo?…
20 ft? 33 ft? …..
Lens efect? big bucket?
I couldn’t belive this photo,,,, and less the text…

This was in the province of South Kalimantan. My boyfriends dad works in the coal mines there and remembers when the snake was captured. They miners did not want to kill the snake as it is magnificent but the are is not far from some local villages (sungai danau) if I am not wrong.

May 8th, 2010 at 4:38 am
The snake was not found in China. It was definitely found in Northern Laos PDR. I am here working on a huge dam project and this photo was presented to me by my driver. It is not a boa. It is a Python. many have been reoprtedly seen here. The photo I have says it was 22 meters long and was found at the poobia mining company in Northern Laos. The people in the photo look like they are from Laos not China.
May 8th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
Another awesome animal killed because of deforestation. Way to go bulldozers
May 12th, 2010 at 10:31 am
I have to say it’s so funny to read the article and the comments that follow. I’m in Laos at the moment and have been shown this picture as well and was told it was found here by the mining company mentioned above. The only problem is they said it was found just last month. Obviously it’s not possible given the date on this article. Therefore I’m afraid no Laos then.
May 18th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
wow it real
i never see before but i want to see it
May 18th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

May 20th, 2010 at 2:45 am
Guys, this photo was taken in rural Georgia near the Okefenokee. My wife’s cousin-in-law forwarded this picture to me. He’s a very reliable man; he is coach of the high school 9th grade football team after all.
So stop saying it’s from Laos or whatever made up countries you’re talking about. This photo clearly pictures two good ol’ country boys and a big ol’ snake.
May 23rd, 2010 at 3:52 am
whoa, that is a very big snake. shame it’s been killed in it’s natural habitat, just to make way for “a new road”
the article gives details of where, when, what, how and why this happened, so there is no need for the comments from other people who think they know all about it.
i’m commenting on this because i agree with Ayu, Bushi and Ryan, nature is being destroyed by greedy humans. and it’s wrong…
May 28th, 2010 at 6:13 am
Aww, heartbreaking
( sad loss of an amazing creature to stupid accident caused by carelessness. Hope his/her mate gets away for good from these loser careless people.
May 29th, 2010 at 2:47 am
Wow! what a huge snake…
It i very funny to all you guys comments above.
Let’s stop having claimed where or when it is from or found but the truth is from our planet, it is not mine or yours but it’s ours.
Pitty, to see his nature animal was killed by human. we should leave something for our next generation to be studied.
I’m sure we will get more and more from nature!!!! Flood/Landslide/storms/earth quake and so on..
May 31st, 2010 at 3:17 pm
I don’t understand why people claim this is found/killed in their country, alot of people is telling you that “You are a killer”! I do not believe it’s an accident from the machineries, I’m a road engineer I never use an excavator to go into a deep forest like that, you work your way in little by little. I’d say they purposly went in there just to kill that snake! All animals would run away from the moment you start the engine/vibration by the tracks, and if a bulldozer was clearing the bush they could have seen that big snake being pushed/pulled from the soil. Those Snakes don’t live underground! This story is a lie or half true.
June 1st, 2010 at 9:22 pm
I’m fairly sure they took the picture to make it look big. Just as Ray said it’s quite unlikely for the snake to be killed by the bulldozer. Am I the only one that’s surprised the only injury/blood the snake has is on it’s head? Being hit by a dozer should probably leave some marks. They probably found the poor creature alongside the path and thought it would be good idea to kill it and take a picture.
Wouldn’t you? I mean, if you could kill a monkey, take a picture, and then later claim it’s bigfoot, wouldn’t you do it?
If only the snake ate the guys, now that would’ve been a story.
June 26th, 2010 at 7:11 am

the snake is a reticulated python and NOT a boa as the article claims.
